Camille Chamoun

CHAMOUN (Camille, Nemr). President of the Republic from 1952-1958.
Born on April 3, 1900 in Deir el-Kamar (Chouf, Mount Lebanon). Son of Nemr Chamoun.

Education:

Collège Sacré-Coeur (Beirut) and secondary studies at Saint-Antoine School (Baabda).
In 1924 he becomes member of the Bar Association.

Career:

- He worked for the french-speaking newspaper “Le Réveil”.
- In 1929, he is elected deputy until his accession to the presidency of the republic in 1952.
- As of 1934, he works for the abolition of the French mandate.
- In 1943, he is member of the government of the newly elected president of the republic Bechara el-Khoury and among the ones arrested and detained 11 days by the French authorities for having restored the Constitution that lead to independence.
- He is minister of Finance in 1938 and holds after that several ministerial portfolios (public works, interior…).
- In 1944, he is nominated ambassador in London until 1947.
- He heads the Lebanese delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations where the Palestinian question is debated.
- In 1948, he represents Lebanon at the Arab League meeting.
- In September 1952, he is elected president of the Republic with 74 votes out of 76.
- As of 1968, he is re-elected member of Parliament, representing the Chouf region. With Raymond Edde and Pierre Gemayel, he creates the “Helf” alliance opposed to the “Chehabist” movement.
- In 1972, he is minister of Interior in Rachid Karame’s government
- In 1975-76, as head of the National Liberal Party that he founded, he plays a leading role during the civil war through the party’s militia “Noumour” (tigers).

Very successful businessman, he headed numerous companies and banks.
Hobbies: traveling, hunting.
Married in 1930 to Ms. Zalfa Tabet (who died in 1971), 2 children: Dany (1931-1990) and Dory (born in 1934).

ولد في دير القمر في 3 نيسان عام 1900

متزوج من السيدة زلفا تابت في 30 كانون الاول عام 1930.

تلقى دروسه الابتدائية بين الحدث والأناضول ودير القمر. ثم انتقل الى معهد القلبين الأقدسين في بيروت ومدرسة القديس انطونيوس في بعبدا حيث اكمل دروسه الثانوية.

من العام 1916 و1918 نفي مع والده الى الاناضول بسبب معارضته للسلطة العثمانية ووجودها في لبنان.

دخل جامعة القديس يوسف عام 1920 وحاز على ايجازة الحقوق عام 1923.

عيِن وزير المالية والاشغال العامة عام 1937 و 1938.

اسس حزب الدستور مع كل من الامير مجيد ارسلان , حميد فرنجية , ميشال زكور , صبري حمادة , سليم تقلا , والشيخ بشارة الخوريِ.

عين وزيرا" 7 مرات: عام 1938 وزبرا" للمال, عام 1934 وزيرا" للداخلية والبريد والبرق, عام 1946 وزيرا" للمال, عام 1947 وزيرا" للداخلية والصحة, عام 1975 وزيرا" للداخلية والبريد والبرق والهاتف والموارد المائية والكهربائية, عام 1984 عين وزيرا" للمال والتعاونيات والاسكان.

انتخب نائبا" ثماني مرات في الاعوام: 1934 – 1937 – 1943 – 1947 – 1951 – 1960 - 1968 - 1972. سقط مرة واحدة في الانتخابات عام 1964 النيابية.

عين عام 1944 وزيرا" مفوضا"للبنان لدى بريطانيا لعامين ونصف العام.

رأس الوفد اللبناني الى مؤتمر الطاولة المستديرة في لندن بين عامي 1945 و1946 لمناقشة القضية الفلسطنية.

مثّل لبنان عام 1948 في هيئة الامم المتحدة في نيويورك.

انتخب عام 1952 في ايلول وتميز عهده بالكثير من الانجازات.

انتهت ولاية الرئيس شمعون عام 1958 ليتولى بعده الجنرال فؤاد شهاب.

اسس حزب الوطنيين الاحرار والذي رأسه حتى العام 1985 حين تولى الرئاسه بعده ابنه داني.

انشأ حلف عام 1968 سمي بالحلف الثلاثي بين عميد الكتلة الوطنية ريمون اده ورئيس حزب الكتائب الشيخ بيار الجميّل.

ترأس الجبهة الوطنية المؤسسة عام 1976.

اسلم الروح في 7 آب عام 1987 عن عمر 87 عام مليئ بالحركة والعطاء والنشاط الذي ما رضي ان يتوقف حتى النهاية.
